Statement of
Purpose
I, Fiona Scally, as a registered childminder aim to provide a childminding service that allows the girls and boys in my care to flourish in a safe, secure and home-based environment.
My experience as a parent and training as a childminder has provided me with strong skills in childcare. I feel very comfortable and competent caring for children of all ages.
I aim to provide a wide range of opportunities in the form of interactive, fun and challenging activities to enable children of all backgrounds and abilities to develop and learn through play in a caring, supportive and happy environment.
I am registered to care for 5 children under the age of 8 and insured to care for children up to the age of 15.
My service is open to all children and families; I may also be able to care for children with additional needs. I live in a two-bedroom end terrace house with my partner Rhodri and our daughter Annie born June 2011. We have goldfish in a small tank in the living room, which are cleaned and fed by myself and no one else. Within my home children are able to use the living room for playing and reading, the kitchen for eating, supervised cooking activities and messy play. When the weather permits the children are encouraged to play in the garden. Here we have a slide, swing, sand and water table, tricycle and other ride-on toys, as well as large and small balls, skipping ropes etc to develop physical skills and large motor development. The bedrooms are out of bounds to minded children with the bathroom being the only room upstairs they will have access to.
We also have a small vegetable patch which the children are free to engage with, from deciding what to grow, to cooking and eating the end results as this teaches the children where their food comes from and promotes healthy eating as well as being fun.
We attend several adult-led playgroups each week including Rhyme time at the local library. All of these play sessions provide opportunities for free play, singing and interaction with other children.
We live within walking distance of several play parks and Trelai Park.
I offer meals in the form of breakfast, lunch, healthy snacks such as fruit and an evening meal if required. However if you would like to provide your child with your own food then all I ask is that it doesn’t contain sweets or chocolate as other children do not understand why one child has sweets when they do not.
School drop-offs in the Ely/Careau area can be discussed and arranged, I can collect children from Windsor Clive primary school and St Francis’ primary school both located on Grand Avenue.
I speak English but will introduce children to the welsh language through nursery rhymes and books. If I have children in my care who speak another language I will try to learn a few phrases which will also be introduced to other children in my care. My partner is also a fluent welsh speaker.
I have a simple admissions policy and welcome visits any time during opening hours (7.30am to 6.00pm). I encourage several pre-visits for you and your child so that we can chat informally and identify your child’s specific needs, preferences and abilities.
Scallywags Childminding Cardiff opens between 7.30am and 6.00pm Monday to Friday and 2-3 Saturdays per month by arrangement, I operate a simple registration system where parents are asked to complete an assessment form, child record form and contract for their child as well as numerous consent forms. Parents are also given copies of all my policies and procedures which are located within the Childminding Prospectus
Children in my care will remain the legal responsibility of their parents/carers and will be cared for according to the individual child contracts that are negotiated before care starts. Please take a look through my childminding prospectus at all the policies and procedures that help make up the contract between us.
My continuing practice as a childminder is subject to regular inspections by the CSSIW. I am obliged to inform CSSIW of any changes to my circumstances and/or any major accidents/accidents. My statement of purpose is regularly reviewed and updated when necessary. Keeping children safe whilst in my care is an absolute priority and in the unlikely event of an accident/emergency situation (involving either the children or myself) my immediate responsibility will be to reassure the child/children. I will then call upon my back-up people (my partner Rhodri Malin in the first instance). Please refer to my accident/emergency procedure for further details.
I work in close partnership with parents to meet the needs of the children in my care. In the first instance any complaints you may have about the service I offer should be brought to my attention. If the matter cannot be resolved you will need to contact the care and social services inspectorate for Wales (CSSIW) at the address below.
